I would like to examine the basic, yet important, issue of what being a Christian mean.
First, to say I am Christian, I must be follower of Christ, as the name implies. To follow someone, I have to know whom I am following. Otherwise I am fooling myself. Therefore, to follow Christ we must know Him.
But, since Christ lived two thousands years ago, then we must be trusting a certain source in our knowledge about Him. As a matter of fact, we must be so sure of the accuracy of this source that many nations, including ours, have given hundreds of thousands of martyrs for the sake of keeping this “truth” alive. Our fathers in the early Church must have been so sure of this source that they emphasized so much on spreading this knowledge about Christ anywhere they can travel to. So, what is this source? Or is it many sources!! Well the answer, as you expect, is the Bible, and it’s the only book in history that tells us about Jesus, confirms that Jesus is the Son of God, and is the only Book in history that contains prophecies that have been fulfilled. That is what makes this Book so powerful that nobody has been able to prove it inaccurate, and nobody, including historians, has been able to show us facts contradicting with the facts in the Bible, including the crucifixion, rise from the dead, and being seen by His disciples.
So, if we are Christians, trusting that Jesus is Son of God, following the teachings of Christ, and trusting the Bible as the only source of those teachings, then we should ask ourselves these questions:
what can be greater than this Book?
Why wouldn’t I read this Book and study it ?
how could I even look for errors in this Book?
if this is the only source, then why would I read, study, or follow other teachings ?
Can I call myself a Christian if I don’t follow those teachings ?
Can I call myself a Christian if I am not following Christ ?
Do I have the knowledge and wisdom more than God to say this section should not be in the Bible?
Is there any part of the Bible that would make me a worse person if followed ?
Is there any part of the Bible that would make me a better person if not followed ?
If we cannot trust the entire Bible then we do not have the motive to study it. If we do not study it then we can’t learn about Jesus and the teachings. If we don’t learn about Jesus and don’t study His teachings then we are really not following Him. If we are not following Him then we cannot call ourselves Christians, and we cannot be Christians.
Supporting verses
Mark 7
5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with `unclean' hands?"
6 He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: "`These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'
8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men."
9 And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!
Luke 6
46 "Why do you call me, `Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?
47 I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice.
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."
Romans 1
21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
2 Timothy 3
16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
